DNA results!

[This was originally posted June 16, 2016 and later edited to fix the table at the end]

The results are in!  I chose to take the Ancestry DNA test because my mother took the same test and I know a lot of people do.  That sounds like I'm jumping on the popular bandwagon, but I wanted to have a lot of cousins show up in the results.  I've also added my dna results to gedmatch.com to get even more cousins and analyze the results more in depth.

Without further ado, here are my ethnicity estimates:

I'm 79% Great Britain!  And then 8% Europe East and 5% Europe West.  I was really surprised at the results.  One, because my mom's results were significantly different and two, because there is no trace of African or Native American.  I'm glad I posted that last blog entry about ordering the test to help determine my mulatto ancestry because I probably wouldn't have if I hadn't seen these results.  It makes it look like there's no chance of any mulatto ancestry in my ancestry.  I'm not so sure and I'll look into that further to help understand why my results are the way they are.  I'm also going to have my dad and other relatives take a dna test too.

Moving on to my mom's results.  I'm supposed to be half of my mom, right?  So, I know it doesn't exactly work that way.  But, I assumed that if my mom is 32% Europe West, I would be closer to 16%.  Of course not exactly but closer to that.  And I also assumed that I would inherit some Europe West from my dad which would bump up that 16 number.  My dad's grandfather comes from Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry with every line leading back to Germany.    Somehow I ended up with 5% Europe West?  I'm not being cynical and I'm not doubting the results.  I just realize that there is a lot that I do not understand and I'm trying to figure it all out.

Here are my mom's results:

She's basically a third Great Britain, a third Europe West, a sixth Irish, and a sixth Europe East and Scandinavia.  I thought it interest that her results were kind of split into thirds.  After all, you have four grandparents which would split things into quarters, right?

Here's a breakdown comparing me and my mom:

Now onto the cousin matches!  I'm excited to start exploring those and I know that there will be more posts following as I learn more.
