Huiatt connections, part 2
Small town newspapers are really great. One such newspaper is the Dayton Review, published in Dayton, Iowa. It is searchable online through Discover America's Story, an online newspaper archive dedicated to small town America.
This little write-up was included in the "Lehigh News" portion of the day's news.
"Marian Vladeff recently received word of the death of her cousin Clifford Huiatt of Pueblo, Colorado."
I know who Clifford Huiatt is. He is my ancestor, Ulysses Grant Huiatt's nephew (through his brother Charles). I never heard of Marian Vladeff. And, just to throw in a spoiler, I'm still not sure how they are related.
I decided to first go with the assumption that they are first cousins. Your first cousins are any grandchildren of your grandparents, not including siblings. I needed to work my way back to grandparents and then trace forward to their grandchildren. In this process, I was really hoping that Marian Vladeff was a cousin through Clifford's father's line (and therefore Ulysses' line) and not through Clifford's maternal line.
I looked at findagrave, census records, Iowa marriage records, etc. Marian Vladeff's paternal grandparents are John Carey and Nancy Mulligan.
Her maternal grandparents are: Ephraim Dillow & Mable Rogers. I started looking at this line first and never got back over to the Carey/Mulligan grandparents.
I have the family fairly well-fleshed out. The Dillows had five children (one is Marian Vladeff's mother). George Dillow, a brother, died fairly young. Still working on the other two brothers. I do know a little more about her sister Florence Annie Dillow (md. Sam Dillingham). Here's one interesting tidbit from findagrave:
Anna Dillow Dillingham
Birth: | Apr. 28, 1894 |
Death: | Jan. 13, 1969 |
Daughter of Ephraim Dillow and Maybelle Huitt | |
Burial: McGuire Bend Cemetery Dayton Webster County Iowa, USA |
In every other record that I've found Maybelle/Mabel/Mable, her last name is Rogers (or a spelling variant). Was she actually a Huiatt (my spelling)? Maybe her mother was? Maybe she was married to a Huiatt before she married Ephraim Dillow? Is this the cousin connection between Anna's niece Marian Vladeff and her cousin Clifford Huiatt?
