Historic Oakwood Cemetery
We've been in the Raleigh-Durham area for eight months now and finally made our way over to the Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh to visit the final resting place for Wesley Jolly. Findagrave already has pictures online, but I wanted to visit the grave in person. My husband and I and our three small children enjoyed our visit to this scenic cemetery. More history about the cemetery can be found here.
Wesley Jolly's birth year is incorrect on the stone. On examination of his military record it does state that he enlisted in the confederacy in 1862 at the age of 25 -- that corresponds to the tombstone. Census records and marriage records indicate an earlier birth.
In 1850, he was 19 (birth around 1831).
In 1860, he was 29 (birth around 1831).
He was also married in 1850 and would have been only 13 years old at the time of that marriage if he had been born in 1837.
